The World Health
Organisation (WHO) recently raised a global alert by declaring the epidemic of
Ebola in West Africa a public health emergency.
It was first identified
in 1976 in tropical regions of Arica. The largest outbreak is 2014 West Africa
Ebola virus outbreak.
Causes
Ebola is caused by the five viruses classified
in the genus Ebola virus, which is one of the three members of the Eiloviridae
family (Filovirus), along with genus Marburgvirus and genus Cuevavirus. A
patient may develop sudden fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache,
vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rash, impaired kidney and liver function.
Direct Contact
Indirect contact with
environments contaminated with such fluids. Exposure to objects such as
needles. Burial ceremonies in which mourners have direct contact with the body
of the deceased person.
Health care workers have
frequently been infected while treating patients. Men who have recovered from
the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks
after recovery from illness.
